Out of the Loop?
For those out of the loop, I recently ran a writing contest called the BLE Milestone Writing Contest in celebration of reaching 2,000 followers on Twitter.
Here are the winner and runner-up!
"Amazon" by Michael Borel ~ Runner-Up
Your friend is doing your makeup, and his work looks like a cubist painting. Your other friend hands you a hoodie she painted last night. It looks like psychedelic vomit - 50% cotton, 50% blended hippie. You put it on anyway. Then she hands you a backpack that looks the same.
Your phone vibrates. It's a text message, all emoji. You check your photocopy of a hand-drawn reference chart to translate the message, which describes the route you'll be taking. You leave the warehouse and follow the instructions exactly, even when it has you go in circles.
You're one of the first to arrive, but the rest appear within minutes. There are at least 30 of you, a sea of mutant rainbow fashion freaks. You enter the Amazon Go store as one. A silent dragon with blinding scales.
The security guards spot you immediately, and know what's coming. They wave their arms and make vague threats, but their eyes are friendly. They take their time alerting the police. They do their jobs well enough, and the camera footage proves it.
To those same cameras, you are invisible. Worse than invisible, actually - you're confusing. It sees a flamingo, an elephant, or maybe a chair, but it never sees you. It can't decide how many of you there are, or how much food you're taking.
It's over in 90 seconds. The silent dragon with blinding scales is sated, and dissolves. You head home, heart pounding at the sound of distant sirens, but they never come near.
You eat well tonight.
